California Quail

The California Quail is an iconic, non-migratory state bird of California. Known for its teardrop-shaped head plume (which is actually six overlapping feathers) and antiphonally paired calls, this social ground-dweller can survive without drinking water by getting moisture from insects and succulents. BTW – “antiphonally” means performing music, speech, or chanting in a responsive style where two separate groups, choirs, or instruments take turns singing or playing back and forth.
